Homecamp pioneered modern hot tenting in Australia and continues to help campers create safe, comfortable setups that extend the camping season year-round.
If you’ve read our Complete Guide to Hot Tenting, you’ll already know the basics of camping with a wood stove. This guide focuses on the next step: choosing the right Winnerwell stove for your tent – whether you’re setting up for a weekend in the bush, a winter expedition, or a semi-permanent glamping site.
Why Stove Choice Matters
A wood stove transforms a tent from temporary shelter into a real home away from home. But not all stoves are created equal. The difference lies in how they manage airflow, combustion, and safety.
Traditional tent stoves draw oxygen from the air inside your shelter. Each hour they can consume 10–20 cubic metres – roughly half the available air in a sealed four-person tent. Without ventilation, this can quickly lead to condensation or, worse, carbon monoxide build-up.
Winnerwell’s External Air stoves solve this problem by drawing combustion air from outside the tent. The result is a cleaner burn, improved heat efficiency, and a far safer environment inside.
At Homecamp, we always recommend using an External Air system whenever possible.
With fire-resistant CottonGuard™ canvas and Winnerwell’s External Air and Secondary Combustion Technology, this is the most refined and dependable hot-tenting setup available.
Homecamp work closely with Winnerwell engineers to ensure every stove jack is positioned perfectly for safe and efficient operation. Recently, we’ve updated all of our hot-tent compatible tents to include not only a precision-cut stove jack, but also a built-in external air intake port – a purpose-designed pipe jack with a flap and Velcro seal that allows the stove’s external air hose to pass cleanly through the tent wall (please note you will still need to make an incision to create a hole in the stove jack – an easy process).
This upgrade means our tents now pair perfectly with Winnerwell External Air Stoves, drawing combustion air from outside the tent for cleaner burning, greater efficiency, and safer, more comfortable heating in cold-weather setups.
For experienced hot-tenters who understand the safety requirements – such as leaving a window open, fitting a carbon monoxide alarm, and never sleeping with the stove lit – the standard Nomad or Woodlander models are still great options.
Understanding the Winnerwell® Range
Winnerwell stoves are precision-engineered from AISI 304 stainless steel – built to last decades of use in the field. Every model delivers efficient combustion, easy pack-down, and clean-burning performance – but each has its own character and purpose.
The most important distinction in the range is between standard models and External Air models:
-
Standard Models (e.g. Nomad PLUS Double View, Woodlander PLUS Double View plus standard versions without the View windows etc.) draw air from inside your tent or cabin -ideal for quick setup and moderate conditions.
-
External Air Models (e.g. Nomad PLUS Double View External Air, Woodlander PLUS Double View External Air, Marsfire External Air) feature a better sealed combustion system that draws oxygen from outside via a dedicated intake pipe. This keeps your tent air clean, improves heating efficiency, and is the safest choice for hot-tenting or semi-sealed shelters.
Model Overview
Nomad PLUS Double View / External Air – Classic box-shaped design with stable folding legs and a flat cooktop.
The standard version is simple and versatile; the External Air version adds sealed combustion for cleaner burn and safer indoor use. Ideal for long stays or cabin setups.
Woodlander PLUS Double View / External Air – Tripod-leg design for fast setup and easy packing.
The Woodlander has a smaller firebox size that the more economical Nomad design; the External Air version adds greater efficiency and safety when used in enclosed spaces.
Marsfire External Air – The latest flagship stove, combining External Air intake with advanced secondary combustion technology for the cleanest, most efficient burn in the range. Best for extreme cold, glamping setups, or full-time hot-tenting.

External Air vs Standard Air Intake
External Air stoves draw all combustion air through a dedicated pipe from outside your tent. This design prevents the stove from consuming your interior oxygen and eliminates the cold draughts caused by negative pressure. It’s also more fuel-efficient and produces less smoke.
Standard Air stoves draw from inside the tent. They’re fine for open or ventilated shelters, and many experienced campers prefer their simplicity – but they do require caution. Always use a carbon monoxide alarm, leave a window or vent cracked open, and never sleep with the stove burning.
If you’re planning a semi-permanent setup or camping through the colder months, an External Air model is the clear choice.
Safe Setup & Regular Maintenance
Your stove will reward you for a little extra care and attention:
-
Use a solid base: Fire-resistant mats are not enough. Place your stove on pavers, a concrete slab or heavy tiles.
-
Maintain clearances: Keep at least 45 cm (18 inches) between the stove and any canvas, or 25 cm (9 inches) with a heat shield.
-
Clean the flue regularly: Every 15–20 hours of burn time, brush the flue with a pipe brush and use a creosote treatment.
-
Check your seals: Inspect gaskets and door fittings each season. A tight seal means better efficiency.
-
Use dry hardwood: Wet or green wood smokes more, clogs the flue and can produce dangerous gases.
-
Never leave it burning unattended. Always supervise children and pets and use a fire guard when needed.
For semi-permanent setups, anchor the stove legs securely and use guy ropes to stabilise the flue in wind.c
Recommended Accessories
A good stove setup is only as safe as its accessories. Homecamp stocks all key Winnerwell components:
-
Triple-Wall Heat Protector Chimney – insulates the flue where it passes through your canvas.
-
Flashing Kit – seals the flue to your tent and prevents heat damage.
-
Spark Arrestor – ships as part of all Winnerwell Stoves, the spark arrestor reduces ember risk and adds rain protection.
-
Fire Resistant Mats – shield your groundsheet – although please note that fire resistant mats have their limitations – Winnerwell’s standard Mats is only rated for use up to 250c.
-
Pipe Brush & Maintenance Kit – keeps your system clean and efficient.

For Long-Stay or Glamping Installations
If you’re running a stove full-time or through the colder months, think of it as part of your structure rather than just gear.
Support the flue externally, keep spare pipe sections on hand, and service your setup at the start and end of each season.
For long-stay setups, stability, safety, and efficient combustion become far more important than sheer heat output.
The Winnerwell® Marsfire External Air Stove isn’t the biggest in the range, but it’s easily the most advanced.
Built with a fully sealed combustion system and secondary-burn technology, it draws 100 % of its oxygen from outside the tent – keeping interior air fresh and greatly reducing carbon-monoxide risk.
Rather than chasing raw heat output, the Marsfire focuses on efficiency and consistency.
Its twin-chamber design produces a smoother, steadier burn—ideal for those operating their stove daily, such as retreat hosts, long-stay campers, or glamping setups that run through winter.
The secondary combustion system burns off residual gases for cleaner flues, less creosote, and minimal maintenance.
Compact yet capable, the Marsfire delivers exceptional warmth and long burn times from a smaller firebox, making it a perfect choice for frequent-use, glamping, or high-efficiency installations where safety, reliability, and easy upkeep matter most.
Beyond Hot Tenting
Winnerwell also build stoves for outdoor cooking and ambience:
-
Woodlander Pizza Oven Stove – combines a true wood-fired pizza oven with a stove body, perfect for decks or patios.
-
Pentagon Stove – features five glass windows for a panoramic flame view; ideal as a glamping centrepiece, not for enclosed tents.
