Based on the design for the traditional trug that was invented in the 1800s in Sussex, England, these beautiful yet strong garden trugs are handmade by a local maker in Oamaru, New Zealand.
Using willow for the hand planed planks and coppiced willow poles from local rivers for the handles and trims, the trugs are made by splitting long, clean poles with a froe and mallet which is then shaped into the sturdy base and assembled with copper boat nails. The wood is then finished with oil and bees wax polish. A true example of a traditional craft.
A lightweight basket to carry freshly picked fruit and vegetables, Trugs are not only a useful garden tool with heritage, they make for a fantastic centrepiece when filled with flowers or double as a top notch picnic hamper. ?
